The property in Barnes had fallen into a state of real disrepair, previously a grand villa it had been converted into a number of bedsits. The family who purchased it challenged creativemass to restore it and return it to the impressive property it had once been, whilst creating a real hub for their four teenage children and friends to congregate and socialise in.
As an architect firm that works to create bespoke projects tailored individually to the needs of each client, creativemass recognised the homeowners’ love for art and wanted to ensure their home was suited to accommodate their extensive collection, and also flexible so they could move items around without damaging the wall surface.
Walls That Work
Claire McDonald, from creativemass, commented: “When designing this project, our aim was to allow the family to have as much flexibility as possible which is why we opted for British Gypsum’s Gyproc Habito plasterboard. The strength and versatility of the plasterboard allows for huge amounts of adaptability for the family both now and in the future, as they will be able to move their artwork – some of which is extremely heavy - around and rearrange the collection as it grows and changes.”
Gyproc Habito is part of British Gypsum’s Homeowner range and is a plasterboard with a reinforced core, making it five times stronger than regular plasterboard. The product is installed in the same way as standard plasterboard, but can support up to 15kg with a single number 10 woodscrew. The super-strength solution means the homeowners can hang their heavier paintings to the wall along with items such as TVs, shelves and mirrors, without specialist fixings.
Claire continued: “We work quite closely with our construction team and their feedback on installing the product was extremely positive. They noted how straightforward the process was and said despite it taking a little longer than regular plasterboard, it was no more complicated and comes with many more benefits. The team all agreed that they would be happy to work with the product again. This is definitely testament to how easy and hassle free Gyproc Habito plasterboard is to work with.”
A Certain Magnetism
The team at creativemass also opted to use another British Gypsum product in the design, Thistle Magnetic Plaster - an innovative magnetised plaster which turns any wall into an interactive display. Applied to new or existing walls, once dry it can be painted or covered with wallpaper.
Clare says: “We specified Thistle Magnetic Plaster in the boot room of the house because the teenagers in the family like to pin letters and work from their school up for their parents to see, and the parents attach reminders to the wall too. As the entrance and exit to the house, the boot room was the perfect location to transform the existing wall into a communication tool for the family”.
Thistle Magnetic Plaster was also used in each of the children’s bedrooms as a unique platform for the children to unleash their creativity on when studying or displaying their photographs and art work.
With the property now complete, the homeowners have expressed that they couldn’t be happier with the end result. Claire adds: “The feedback from the client has been fantastic, they love how Gyproc Habito and Thistle Magnetic Plaster have both contributed to make their home a more flexible space tailored to suit their lifestyle.”
“Working with British Gypsum has created a new, higher standard of specification for us. We will definitely use Gyproc Habito Plasterboard and Thistle Magnetic Plaster again because they offer our clients a better fabric to their home - and now we have tried and tested them both, we know just how good they are!”
