Amanda creates a multi functional space

Homeowner transforms guest bedroom with ThistlePro Magnetic

Amanda Webster and her boyfriend moved into their new home 18 months ago and were overwhelmed by magnolia walls and plain decor. Being the first people to live in the property, they wanted to create a welcoming home which their wider family would love to visit.

When it came to transforming one of the bedrooms on the third floor of the terraced property, Amanda decided she wanted to design a play space for her nieces and nephews to enjoy. At the same time, it needed to be used as a guest bedroom too. So, Amanda jumped at the chance to install ThistlePro Magnetic in the room to create an interactive and flexible space.

Amanda spent many hours researching how she could use the walls and what items would work well when attached to it with magnets.

Amanda attached the tree decal to one of the walls and added framed family photographs with magnets on the back of them to the branches. Finally, she bought a box of magnetic letters and numbers so her younger relatives could make words on the wall with them.

Amanda left the plaster to dry for a week, to make sure that it was set, and then painted all of the walls except one in a teal colour from the Dulux Castaway range. The remaining wall was painted with blackboard paint.

Amanda adds: “I’m really pleased with the end result and the kids love it. Recently they all came over and had a drawing competition - it was tough to choose a winner! We did have to move the photographs on the tree up to higher branches when they were in the room to make sure they didn’t get damaged, but that’s part of the beauty of magnetic plaster – it’s no problem to move them back again. In addition to that, when I want to change the images in the frames I don’t need to worry about nail marks or screws as I can just switch the pictures and reattach to the wall with magnets.”

Amanda also purchased a day bed from Ikea and added throws and cushions to match the colour scheme. This was so guests have a stylish place to stay if they need to. Amanda comments: “When we do have visitors, we just take down the magnetic letters, wipe the chalk off the blackboard wall and then we have a more grown-up space for our older guests. We have created a truly flexible room - it’s so much better than I expected and is now my favourite room in the house.”

Amanda was one of five winners of the British Gypsum Homeowner Creative Collaborator competition on Facebook. Each of the winners received a £500 voucher and two bags of ThistlePro Magnetic to makeover an unloved room in their home. The other winners created designs including a pastel themed living room, a monochrome bedroom and an industrial master bedroom. All designs reflected how easy it is to incorporate ThistlePro Magnetic into any room or scheme.
